Reset Microsoft 365 Admin Password (with Microsoft Support)

Reset Microsoft 365 Global Admin Password (with Microsoft Support)

Before you call (2–3 minutes)

Have these handy:

  • Global Admin sign-in ID (email/UPN) and tenant primary domain (e.g., yourcompany.onmicrosoft.com).

  • A reachable phone number and email for the Global Admin.

  • Recent Microsoft 365 purchase/invoice or subscription/order ID (if asked for verification).

  • Your organization name and a secondary contact (optional, but helpful).

Note: For security, Microsoft will only work directly with the customer/tenant admin.

Call Microsoft (toll-free)

  • Dial: 0008000404454 or 0008004402008

  1. Choose language (e.g., Hindi/English).

  2. Call-recording preference: Press 1 to allow, Press 2 to opt out.

  3. When asked who you are, select Business user.

  4. When asked for the product/issue, say “Office 365”.

  5. Ticket type: choose “New ticket.”

What to say to the engineer

  1. “We need a Global Admin password reset for our Microsoft 365 tenant.”

  2. Provide:

    • Microsoft 365 Global Admin ID (email/UPN)

    • Global Admin contact details (phone + email)

  3. Ask them to email an acknowledgment and give you the Service Request (SR) number.

  4. Request: “Please escalate to the Microsoft Data Protection Team for the admin password reset.”

  5. Complete any identity verification they require (they may confirm domain ownership, send a verification code to a registered contact, or ask for subscription/billing details).

If Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) blocks sign-in, ask them to reset/clear MFA for the Global Admin as part of the process.

Receive the reset and sign in

  1. Microsoft will provide either a temporary password or a secure reset link (to the verified admin email/phone).

  2. Go to admin.microsoft.com and sign in with the temporary password/reset link.

  3. Create a new strong password when prompted.

  4. Re-set MFA/Security info (Authenticator app, phone, backup email) to ensure future recovery works.

  5. Save your SR number and the date for your records.
